What changed
Instagrams recommendation engine now leans heavily on visual and audio understanding of your content, plus who saves and shares it. Hashtags dropped from being a primary discovery lever to being one signal among many. Posting 30 hashtags does not send you to the Explore page the way it did in 2019.
What still works
Three to five relevant, specific hashtags help Instagram categorise your content correctly, which affects who it gets shown to in Reels and Explore. A hyper-niche hashtag with 20K followers is worth more than a generic one with 20 million because the audience is more likely to actually convert on your product.
Reels vs feed vs stories
On Reels, hashtags matter for discovery in the Explore feed. On feed posts, they matter less but still nudge categorisation. On Stories they are essentially decorative. If you only optimise for one, optimise for Reels.
A working framework
Pick one branded hashtag you use on everything. Pick two mid-size hashtags (100K to 500K posts) directly relevant to your product. Pick one big hashtag if truly relevant. Skip the rest. Consistency across posts beats hashtag volume. Test which sets your content is showing up under weekly in Insights.
Do not obsess
Hashtags will not save mediocre content. If a Reel is not stopping the scroll in the first two seconds, no hashtag stack rescues it. Spend 90 percent of your effort on the creative, 10 percent on the hashtags. That ratio is the honest answer.
